THREE OF A KIND: Pools With a View

Pick somewhere picturesque to take the plunge!

If you’re a serious swimmer - goggles, rubber cap and someone poolside with a stopwatch egging you on – this feature may not float your boat. At least, not until you stop for breath and take a look around.

It’s more for the lazy, two-lengths-then-onto-a-lounger type; the one whose over-arm stroke is, well, a hand raised in the direction of a hovering waiter. Someone on holiday, or at least taking a short break, at a hotel with a pool. Outdoors.

Picture it now: water a wonderful shade of turquoise with scattered diamonds of sunlight dancing on the surface, inviting loungers with tables alongside for your book, your drink, your sun-cream and your shades, plus plenty of fresh, dry towels the size of Texas. What more could you want?

We suggest: a view.

Not just any view, but one that takes your breath away. And we’ve found three to die for, at HTWN hotels. Which is for you? Want to feast your eyes on an ocean, mountains or the minarets of an ancient Moroccan medina?

The pool shown above, with wonderful views of Madeira’s steep, dramatic cliffs plunging into the Atlantic, is Quinta da Rochinha – a stunning, contemporary restoration of a former sugar warehouse.

At Castel Fragsburg, a former hunting lodge perched high in the Italian Dolomites, the pool is heated, the air is pure and the views are awesome. It’s the perfect place to get away from it all – better still, it boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant.

And that Moroccan medina? It’s in Essaouira, on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. In Arabic, Essaouira means ‘the beautifully designed’ – and the same applies to the rooftop pool at L’Heure Bleue Palais, an exquisite hotel in a beautifully restored former governor’s palace. The view from the pool is as fabulous by night or by day. And while you’re up there, you can enjoy a massage in a glass cubicle which ensures your privacy, but still gives you that view.

Three stunning pools, three stunning views – now all you have to do is choose...

Wouldn’t you rather swim somewhere really special?
