FOOD & DRINK: A Picnic Made in Heaven

...well actually in Tetbury, is perfect for a Cotswolds day out

Provided by the smallest hotel on this website, but catering for the biggest appetites, the perfect picnic is packed with ideas for your next al fresco occasion. (A word of warning: as with supermarket shopping, reading this article is best not undertaken by those who haven’t eaten recently!)

Guests at Oak House No 1, a boutique hotel in Tetbury with just four bedrooms – and a clientele that includes famous faces from the TV and music industries – can pre-order this mouth-watering meal-in-a-hamper, from May to September. And it’s hard to imagine a better companion to take to polo at Cirencester Park, or the Badminton or Gatcombe Park Horse Trials – apart from your other half, of course, and up to six hungry friends. Other local events and attractions providing the perfect excuse for the perfect picnic include Westonbirt Aboretum, summer concerts and Cotswold country walks.

What’s in the hamper? For six, you’ll get two bottles of Moet & Chandon champagne, a bottle of wine - red, white or rose – and two bottles of still mineral water, plus smoked salmon and cream cheese blinis with fresh herbs, chicken tikka skewers with mint chutney and fresh coriander, and a selection of mini-sandwiches, with such fillings as poached salmon with Dijon mayonnaise and watercress, free-range egg and cress, and free-range chicken with stuffing.

As well, there are two large, home-made quiches and two large, traditional pork pies, plus pasta salad with pesto, pine nuts and baby spinach, Greek salad with feta and vine-ripened tomatoes, a mixed green salad with French dressing and spicy raj rice with cashews. A cheese board comes with crackers, and there’s also a selection of country bread rolls.

Nearing the finish-line, there’s a fresh fruit salad, as well as freshly home-baked cakes and fruit tarts, and chocolate mints. And finally, two flasks of hot water together with tea, coffee milk and sugar.

For two or four people, you get fewer bottles and less of all the foods listed – but you won’t go hungry! And for anyone whose favourite food wasn’t mentioned, Oak House No 1 are happy to source special requests, if you ask when you book your room.

Wouldn’t you rather stay somewhere really special?

This hotel was originally a private house, built in the 17th Century - probably for a wealthy wool merchant.
