MIDDLETHORPE HALL & SPA, York

THE PAST:

This very fine William and Mary house - a perfect symmetry in red brick with limestone dressings, set in 20 acres of gardens - is next to York Racecourse and just five minutes from the city centre.

Built in 1699 for one Thomas Barlow, a master cutler from Sheffield, it was for a time the home of the famous diarist, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. In 1980, after an undignified decade as a nightclub, it was rescued from neglect and decay, sympathetically restored by Historic House Hotels, and re-opened as a luxury hotel, restaurant and spa in 1984.

THE PRESENT:

Middlethorpe Hall’s restoration, conservation and conversion into a country house hotel has been carried out to exacting and historically accurate standards. Elegantly decorated in the manner of the 18th Century and furnished with antiques and fine paintings, its appearance and ambiance is that of a well-furnished and beautifully kept private manor house.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

There are many hotel choices for visitors to York - this one's location, at the edge of the city and the edge of the countryside which envelops it, will ensure that you get the best of both worlds. Better still, you will not feel that you are in a hotel - but like special guests in a very fine home.

The hotel is licensed for civil weddings.
