HILTON SA TORRE, near Llucmajor, Mallorca

The history of the Sa Torre estate, or finca, dates back to the end of the 14th century, when King James was bestowed it to the Febrer family. In 1381, the owner was a young nobleman, Bernardo Febrer. It then passed to Catalina de Mora, wife of another nobleman, Pedro Tornamira, and subsequently to Pereta de Mora y Santa Cilia, the wife of Lorenzo de Marí. The estate passed to the Villalonga family in 1540 – this date is engraved above one of the main doors – and remained in their hands for over 450 years.
Central to the property is the manor house. A traditional Mallorcan windmill, dating from the 15th Century and still in working order, stands in the extensive grounds, and there is also a well-preserved, 19th-Century, neo-gothic chapel.
The Sa Torre estate sold to Grupo Drac and, after some restoration, opened as a hotel in 2008. At the beginning of 2010, it was bought by Gestión T3, which specialises in managing hotels with different brands, ensuring that each is the most appropriate for the location. At the point of purchase, the Sa Torre estate required a total restoration, and over €44 million was spent on achieving this.

Set in 50,000 sq m of countryside, amid almond trees and olive groves, the Sa Torre today combines the best elements of the island’s rural tradition and with the modern-day luxuries of a 5-star hotel.
The redesign and refurbishment which achieved this was masterminded by the highly regarded Spanish interior designer, Mercedes González López de Carrizosa - who has also worked on design projects such as Madrid’s Ritz Hotel and the Plaza Athenénée in Paris – and has restored Sa Torre to its former glory whilst preserving many of the original features. Before the design concept was conceived, exhaustive research was carried out to ensure that the hotel retained the traditional character of an historic Mallorcan finca whilst meeting guests’ expectations.
The hotel is made up of several buildings, many of which formed part of the historic finca. In the centuries-old manor house itself, the original layout of rooms has been retained, with each used to its best advantage. Several spacious lounges have been created in this way; and feature a combination of rustic and antique furniture, juxtaposed with modern art and contemporary artefacts. In one, the original press used for wine-making can be found. There is also a library, located in the vaulted former wine-cellar. The theme of combining historic pieces with modern design, and character with cutting-edge convenience, continues throughout the hotel.
Services and amenities include multi-lingual staff, private transfers to and from the airport, concierge, car-rental desk, laundry and valet service, currency exchange, safety deposit boxes, baggage storage, a business centre and free newspapers.

Yes - if you want to enjoy luxury, comfort and fine dining (this is the only hotel on the island with a Michelin-starred restaurant) on an historic estate with traditional Mallorcan character, and in a rural setting. Nevertheless, the sea isn’t far away – and in summer, the hotel provides a complimentary shuttle service daily to Es Trenc beach, and weekly (on Thursdays) to Palma beach. As for location, the hotel is just a 15-minute drive from the airport, and 20 minutes by car from Palma. (Scroll down to end for GETTING THERE details.)
Children are most welcome at the Hilton Sa Torre, and associated services include cots, baby-sitting (charges apply), high chairs and a children’s menu in the restaurants and the free, multilingual Es Petit Moli Kids Club, for those aged from 3 to 14, during the summer season. Children of 18 and under stay free when sharing a room with an adult; a second room for children aged 18 or younger is charged at 50% of the rate of the first room. Children aged 10 and under are entitled to complimentary food and drink in designated areas of the hotel, when accompanied by an adult.
The Hilton Sa Torre is licensed to perform civil wedding ceremonies.

At the Michelin-starred Zaranda Sa Torre Restaurant, classically trained chef Fernando Pérez Arellano offers traditional Mediterranean dishes with a contemporary twist. Recently featured dishes include oxtail cannelloni with spinach and Jerusalem artichokes, pumpkin capelletti with white truffle, marinated monkfish with parsnip broth, panache of seasonal fruits with duckling confit, and an orange and saffron seafood escabeche. Fernando creates his menu selection according to the seasonal availability of locally sourced fresh ingredients, including wild and traditional herbs from the hotel’s grounds and garden; and presents it in three guises: table d’hôte plus two menus de degustación (tasting menus). Diners can choose their own wines from a collection of over 170 of the very best Spanish – including some produced on the island itself - and international wines; the tasting menus come with the option of a selection of complementary wines. The table d’hôte menu is €60 for two courses; the tasting menus are €73 for seven courses and €85 for 10 courses. Fernando’s wife, Itziar Rodríguez, welcomes and takes care of dining guests with warmth, charm and professionalism. The restaurant seats a maximum of 30, and is also open to non-residents. Lunch is available from Friday to Sunday; dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.

Its five pillars are pure aroma, pure sound, pure touch, pure sight and pure taste. Mindful that aromas stay with us long after memories fade, Sa Torre Pure Spa has created its very own; music is carefully chosen to encourage relaxation; all materials used at the spa – such as wood, rattan and stone - are pleasant to the touch; pure sight is represented by the sunlight which inundates the pool, setting off to perfection its blue colour and the gentle candlelight; and finally, guests can experience pure taste through the selection of teas, natural fruit juices, and mint and lemon water served in the spa.
The spa’s indoor pool is heated to 30 degrees Centigrade, and features relaxation beds, swan-neck massage jets and bubbles. The thermal zone’s water circuit – consisting of a steam room with eucalyptus, a dry sauna, an ice fountain, a footbath, an aquadom and a sensations shower -complements the spa treatments perfectly by invigorating the whole body and thus promoting good health. Sixteen different massage treatments are offered, along with body treatments and wraps; and there is a Gentlemen’s Spa Menu for male guests.
There is also a gym – open 24 hours a day – with a range of the latest equipment.
