CONTI DI SAN BONIFACIO, near Grosseto, Tuscany

The family of the Counts of San Bonifacio ruled the city of Verona, and vast agricultural areas in north-east Italy, for nearly two centuries; and have been cultivating vines, and creating wines, for 1100 years. A document dated 929AD, referring to family wine production, remains in their possession today.

The current Count, Manfredo, and his English wife and Countess, Sarah, have restored the old stone farmhouse which lies at the heart of this working wine estate in the wooded hills of the Maremma region, and made it into an intimate, boutique hotel.
The warm welcome and thoughtful service which characterise Conti di San Bonifacio are immediately evident, as a welcoming Prosecco appears.

You can be as relaxed or as active as you wish in this Tuscan retreat, which offers rural tranquillity, commands restful views of distant hills and exudes an air of splendid isolation – yet is only an hour from Pisa or Siena, and less than half an hour from a beach. Conti di San Bonifacio is a wine resort, and offers wine tours, tastings and excursions, as well as cooking classes. The hotel is also licensed for weddings. (Scroll down to end for GETTING THERE details.)

Choose, according to season, from a sun-lounger poolside out on the deck, or on a deep sofa in front of a blazing fire in one of the lounges.

The hotel offers breakfast, lunch and dinner - which can be served in the dining room in the main building or - weather permitting - on the terrace or at poolside, as well as in the rooms. Also, picnics can be prepared for guests to take out. Cuisine is simple, authentic, traditional Tuscan, and based on fresh local ingredients, in season and at their best.
Wines from the vineyards are available for tasting, and wine courses, wine excursions and cookery classes are offered.
