THE ARDEN, Waterside, Stratford-upon-Avon

THE PAST:

The main house of The Arden Hotel, Udimore House, dates from the mid- to late-17th Century. On this site earlier than that stood an Elizabethan building named Brooke House – the foundations of which were, at one time, owned by a John Shakespeare. He was the father of William Shakespeare, who is reputed to have written some of his works in the garden of Brooke House. The ‘Elizabethan Knot Garden’ created for The Arden Hotel was inspired by the original garden which would have been found on the site in Shakespeare’s time.

THE PRESENT:

The Arden Hotel, once part of the Flowers Brewery estate, has been leased by the Royal Shakespeare Company since 1965. More recently, the RSC entered a partnership with the Eden Hotel Collection. The RSC has donated a number of original character sketches from its past productions to The Arden, and these can be seen on display in the main building, Udimore House.
A multi-million pound refurbishment has turned this property into a stylish, elegant boutique- style, luxury hotel. It is one of seven hotels in The Eden Hotel Collection, all of which feature on HotelsThatWereNot.com - put Eden Hotel Collection in the search box above to see them listed.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

If you are coming to Stratford-upon-Avon for an RSC production, you will not find a more conveniently located hotel than this one, which is immediately across the road from the theatres. Furthermore, the hotel’s exclusive Club Bar – for residents and members only – which oozes theatricality and serves drinks late into the night, is perfect for post-theatre debates and an after-dinner nightcap. You are also well-placed at The Arden for exploring Shakespeare country, historic Warwick and, a little further afield, the Cotswolds and the Vale of Evesham.
The Arden is licensed for civil wedding ceremonies.
