The Xara Palace was built as a private residence for the noble family of Moscate Parisio in the 17th Century in Mdina, Malta’s former capital, and it forms part of that city’s bastion walls. One of the hotel’s two restaurants is called Trattoria A.D.1530 in honour of the year in which Mdina, then known as Citta Notabile (Noble City), was granted to the Knights of St John.
During World War II, British officers of the RAF used the hotel as a mess hall. In 1949, the property became a hotel, which ran for many years but eventually fell into decline. In 1996, it was bought by the Zammit Tabona family, whose vision was to restore the building to its former glory, and create a unique hotel experience for discerning visitors.
Local architectural and restoration specialists Architectural Projects were commissioned to undertaking the painstaking renovation process – and did so using original drawings and plans from Government archives, which enabled them to achieve a sympathetic and historically accurate restoration. Features such as the façade, the atrium and the piano nobile were reconstructed to be as close to the original designs as possible. The guest rooms were taken back to their original height – some over six metres – which has allowed the inclusion of an innovative mezzanine floor in some suites. The project was completed in May 1999, and The Xara Palace was officially re-opened by Mr and Mrs. Zammit Tabona's daughter and son.

This family-run Relais & Chateaux property is the only hotel in the city. Although completely up-to-date, to the highest international standards, it retains the time-honoured character for which it is famed, both locally and abroad.
It is situated in one of Mdina’s old squares, facing another historic palace; yet, at the same time, as part of this fortified city’s walls, it holds a hilltop position and commands panoramic views of the island.

Yes, if you value truly personalised service, extra attention to detail and a hotel experience that exceeds expectations. Yes, if you want to be based in the historic heart of Malta: Mdina’s story can be traced back over 4,000 years, and it has a wealth of cultural, architectural and religious treasures. And yes, if you like the idea of a quiet, traffic-free environment. Known as ‘The Silent City’ and lamp-lit after dark, Mdina generally bans cars within its walls at night, making dinner on one of the hotel’s terraces, or a stroll through its narrow, cobbled streets even more of a delight.
Whether you want to explore the rich heritage of an island that stands at the crossroads of the routes used by the civilisations that wrought the Mediterranean region’s history; or to simply enjoy its climate, visit its beaches and bask in the warm welcome it offers to visitors, The Xara Palace is an ideal place to stay.

The elegant, high-ceilinged lounge is a haven of tranquillity. There is also an inviting, glass-roofed atrium, furnished with comfortably cushioned chairs and glass-topped tables, which also features an abundance of lush plants. In addition, each of the hotel’s 17 suites has its own, separate sitting area.

There are two restaurants at the Xara Palace, where guests can enjoy modern Mediterranean cuisine. In addition, you may elect to dine in the privacy of your room. Group Lunches are available on request, and enquiries for Private Functions and Special Celebrations are welcomed at The Xara Palace.

The award-winning and elegant de Mondion Restaurant, atop Mdina’s bastion walls, has its own bastion terraces which command spectacular panoramic views of the island – and of the colourful fireworks that frequently light Malta’s summer skies. Executive Chef Kevin Bonello and his talented brigade present an unforgettable fine-dining experience, with beautifully created dishes, in which only the freshest and highest quality ingredients are sourced, and only the most sensitive cooking methods utilised, to preserve taste and authenticity. The de Mondion Restaurant is closed on Sundays.

The Trattoria AD 1530, open for coffee, lunch, dinner, snacks and afternoon tea, is a less formal eatery, situated in one of the the old squares of Mdina, with the beautiful and imposing Vilhena Palace directly opposite and the magnificent 17th-Century palazzo of The Xara Palace on the other side. It has, as well, a charming indoor dining space, which features high arched ceilings, and walls lined with old carpentry tools and other memorabilia. Trattoria AD 1530 serves traditional and tasty food typical of the term ’trattoria', including salads, pasta dishes, pizzas, fish and meat main courses, sandwiches, traditional platters and mouth-watering desserts and ice creams. A good selection of wines and cocktails is also available.

The Xara Palace’s 17 individually designed, luxurious rooms and suites are light, intimate, comfortable and traditional, decorated with genuine antique furniture and luxurious fabrics and enhanced with original paintings by Maltese masters and international artists. The majority have stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Bathrooms are marble-clad and feature a heated towel rail, hairdryer, personal scales, telephone and toiletries.
Room service is available, and Wi-Fi is free - and accessible in most common areas and rooms within the Hotel.
