BOVEY CASTLE, North Bovey, Dartmoor, Devon

THE PAST:

North Bovey Manor House - which, in 2003 was re-named Bovey Castle - was built by Frederick Smith, the son of William Henry Smith, who transformed his grandfather’s newspaper distribution and railway bookstall business into the nationwide high-street retailer: W.H. Smith. (Although often referred to as Viscount Hambleden, he in fact never held this title, although upon his death in 1891, his widow was made Viscountess Hambleden in his honour.)

In 1890, William Henry bought the 5,000-acre estate on which the house was built from the Earl of Devon, for £103,000. It included extensive woodland, some 30 farms and several ancient manors including North Bovey and Moretonhampstead. The lavish new house which Frederick built, in neo-Elizabethan style, featured a banqueting hall with minstrel's gallery, a Jacobean-style staircase, an oak-panelled dining room and an Adam drawing room. It was to become one of the family’s many country retreats and when they made a (rare) visit, local villagers would turn out to watch their arrival by train, on which they had a private coach and also a box-car for their horses. At Moretonhampstead, they would switch to their fleet of carriages or later motor cars, for the final stage of the journey.

During World War I, the house became a convalescent home for officers.

On Frederick’s death in 1928, his estate – which consisted of the entire ordinary shareholding in WH Smith, as well his many properties – attracted £1million in death duties. To meet that bill, North Bovey Manor House and the estate were sold at auction. The purchasers - Great Western Railway – converted it to a hotel and golf course, which opened in 1930. Between 1935 and 1936, 17 more bedrooms were added, along with a cocktail bar, a dining room and courts for squash and badminton. The property attracted some famous guests, including von Ribbentrop - who, under Hitler, served as Ambassador to the Court of St James and later Minister for Foreign Affairs. He brought with him his wife and a large contingent of servants and guards, and took over an entire floor to accommodate them.

After World War II - during which it was used as a military hospital - the property was returned to Great Western Railway, and re-opened as a hotel. In 1991, it was acquired and expanded by new owners, who placed much emphasis on the golf course, which soon became known as one of England's finest.

The year 2003 brought the change of name to Bovey Castle. The property has, since then, again been expanded with the addition of 22 lodges, a spa and pool. Further refurbishment was undertaken in 2008.

In June of 2014, the Bovey Castle estate was acquired by luxury boutique hotel operator Eden Hotel Collection - winners of the ‘AA Small Hotel Group of the Year’ 2014-2015 - which plans to spend some £2million on restoring the hotel and estate to its former glory. It is one of eight hotels in The Eden Hotel Collection, all of which feature on HotelsThatWereNot.com - use the search box above to see them listed.

THE PRESENT:

Today, Bovey Castle is a luxury destination that’s also unpretentious, relaxed and indulgent. It combines a 64-bedroom hotel rich in history, 14 contemporary 3-bedroom self-catering lodges, an excellent spa, an 18-hole championship golf course, and a resort desk offering a comprehensive range of activity and leisure options. The phrase ‘something for everyone’ is much over-used in the travel and hospitality industries, but for Bovey Castle, it’s an accurate definition.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

Yes, if you would like a luxury break at the heart of Dartmoor National Park. Yes, if you’re looking for a good holiday base – catered or self-catering - from which to discover other Devon delights, from its moors to its shores. Yes, too, for an indulgent girlie (or golf widows?) spa getaway.

Bovey Castle is also great for a family escape, with fun for all ages and pets welcome, plus services to ensure that parents enjoy a break, too. All facilities needed for baby-care are on hand, and evening baby-sitting services can be arranged in advance. The hotel has, uniquely, a Lego room service menu, and works with the Little Concierge Company, from whom infants’ essentials, such as nappies, milk, food and toiletries can be pre-ordered to await your arrival.

As well, during school holidays and half-term, The Playroom’s caring, qualified staff offer an exciting range of activities - such as painting, clay work, storytime, games and creative play for 3- to 7-year-olds (and under-3s when accompanied and supervised by a parent or babysitter aged 16 or over) during two daily sessions from 10 am to 1pm, and from 2pm to 7pm. There is a charge of £10 per hour, or £20 per session and pre-booking is strongly advised.
Please use the Make an Enquiry button below to check availability during your stay.

And, again during school holidays and half-term, for children aged 7 to 14, Bovey Rangers provides supervised activity sessions which can include reptile and owl encounters, face-painting, archery, rock climbing, pond dipping, survival skills, raft building, canoeing and golf lessons. Charged at £32 per session, these can be pre-booked or signed-up for at reception on a daily basis.

THE PROPERTY IN DETAIL:

RELAXING
Find yourself a cosy corner in the imposing, high-ceilinged Cathedral Room or the more intimate Library – each of which has a fireplace and access to the lawned South Terrace; or escape to the elegant, period-decorated Adam Room. There are also comfortable seating areas in the spacious Reception lobby.

EATING & DRINKING
The very inviting Oak Bar has wood-panelled walls, an imposing plasterwork ceiling and a grand piano to add to your enjoyment of pre- and post-dinner drinks. There’s a very impressive array of whiskies and spirits, including the very best malts and fine armagnacs, some dating back to the time the house was built. Cocktails are also available, of course, and the hotel’s mixologists are constantly developing more.

COCKTAIL-MAKING (OR MOCKTAIL-MAKING) SESSIONS are available in the Oak Bar. At these, under the guidance of Bovey Castle's resident mixologists, guests will learn about the history and technique behind creating some of the world's most famous cocktails - from the classic Cosmopolitan to the decadent Brandy Alexander. During the session, each person will be called behind the bar to recreate one of the following cocktails: Vodka Martini, Amaretto Sour, Cosmopolitan, Caipirinha, Mojito, Brandy Alexander, Bramble, Margarita, Bloody Mary or Daquiri. The mixologist will also offer advice and guidance for those who prefer to invent their own cocktail. The cost is £40pp, including a selection of cocktails to taste and to drink. A minimum of three people is required; the maximum number per session is eight.

Bovey Castle’s Lounges offer food service from 9am. Elevenses are served until 12 noon. Available to accompany your pot of loose leaf tea or coffee are homemade biscuits, toasted teacake with butter and jam, croissant or pain au chocolat. Between 12 noon and 10pm, soup of day, a selection of sandwiches, West Country cheese ploughman’s lunch, Caesar salad, Scotch egg, burgers with chips and a smoked salmon platter with brown bread and capers are offered.

The main restaurant is The Edwardian Grill. Decorated in Art Deco style to reflect an era of elegance and fine living, it features hand-painted chinoiserie wall- coverings. Candlelight enhances the sophisticated atmosphere, which is further complemented by immaculate service. Exceptional cuisine ensures an outstanding dining experience; with the focus always on flavour. Traditional Sunday lunch in the restaurant presents a varied selection of locally-sourced meat, fish and vegetarian options, with a two-course menu for £19.95 and three courses for £24.95.

The Castle Bistro is a more informal dining option. It offers a menu throughout the day - from coffee and pastries, lunch in the middle of your day's activities or a snack after golf, to dinner in a relaxing atmosphere, as well as a special children's menu. Opening hours are 8am to 10pm, with last food orders taken at 9.30pm.

A discretionary service charge* of 12.5% is added to food and beverage purchases. No further gratuities are required.

FALCONRY and BIRD OF PREY EXPERIENCE
Held in the afternoon, near the summerhouse at Bovey Castle, a Bird of Prey experience is an unforgettable opportunity to fly a variety of different birds of prey, observe their individual characteristics and see, close up, the wonderful partnership that exists between falconers and their birds. Bird of Prey Experience requires a minimum of two people with a minimum age of 8 years, with all under-16s requiring adult supervision. A 90-minute session costs £65pp.

Lasting approximately 3 hours, a hands-on Falconry Experience (including Eagle Experience) at Martin Whitley’s Dartmoor Hawking falconry school begins with an introduction to the various birds of prey cared for there, before moving on to flying owls, working with high-speed falcons and then enjoying an Eagle Experience, returning to the hotel with a hawk escort.
Accompanied by our resident falconer and Boris the shaggy pointer, guests will be given their own hawk to hunt with for the session, with full instruction on the basics of handling and recalling it. Once this is completed, the hunting party will move to an area to see the hawks in action. Quarry species and hunting style will vary depending on the time of year (during the main hunting season, October – January, full hunting days can be arranged).
Your Eagle Experience will include the opportunity to meet and fly the hotel eagles: Artemis and Rosie, Bovey Castle's most exciting birds of prey. These are the only birds of their magnitude in the UK that can be handled and flown by members of the public. At the end of the session (approximately 90 minutes), you will be escorted back across the valley to the hotel with hawks. A 3-hour session costs £120pp.
Falconry sessions can be tailored to provide both amateurs and expert bird-handlers with a bespoke Dartmoor experience, with more specialist hunting with either falcons or eagles also available during the season (falcons: August – October; eagles: October – February).
For safety reasons, there is an age restriction of 16 years for the Eagle Experience. Basic fitness is also essential as the Eagle Experience may include walking on Dartmoor and holding the eagles, which are not feather-light!
All falconry activities are weather dependent. NB A 100% cancellation fee applies if cancelled by guests 48 hours prior to the event.

FLY FISHING instruction and coaching take place on the hotel lakes with our fully-qualified instructor. This session is a wonderful introduction to fly fishing; you will be taught the fundamentals of fly-casting and will usually progress to the extent whereby you can fish. Fly-fishing sessions can be arranged for from one to a maximum of four guests at one time. There is a minimum age limit of eight years for fly fishing at Bovey Castle.
A 02-hour session costs £95 for the first person, and £140pp thereafter.

Private fly fishing sessions may be available by prior appointment.
Fly-fishing on the Bovey Castle estate
Fishing permits for residents and non-residents for the hotel lakes and the rivers Bovey and Teign may be purchased directly from the resort desk. There is also a wide range of fly fishing on rivers and lakes off-site, with professional guiding available by prior arrangement.

GAME SHOOTING AND DEER STALKING Arrangements can be made for driven pheasant shoots, duck flighting, rough shooting, snipe and woodcock shooting near to Bovey Castle. This is good local shooting with local people, with around 40 birds on a typical driven pheasant day.
