XV BEACON, Boston, Massachusetts

THE PAST:

The eye-catching Beaux Arts building which now houses XV Beacon Hotel was designed by renowned Boston architect William Gibbons Preston in 1903. Construction was completed in 1905. A prime example of Classical revival style, the symmetry of its 10-storey façade begins with two of cast iron, adorned with gilded shields. The third storey features a limestone band, which supports five storeys of Roman brick above. The ninth and tenth floors feature limestone-fluted columns with mosaic inserts, capped by an opulent, oversized copper cornice.
Former tenants include the Boston Transit Commission, in 1905; the Rapid Transit Commission in 1906; and Boston School Committee, from 1923.
In 1999, 15 Beacon Street became a hotel, taking the address of the building as its name, and opening its doors on December 31st.

THE PRESENT:

The creative renovation of this landmark building into a luxury hotel was undertaken by Boston architect Patrick Sharkey and interior designer Celeste Cooper. As many as possible of the building’s original architectural elements have been retained, including the original cage elevator, the grand marble staircase and cast-brass lit railing with brass newel post. The Wine Cellar of the hotel’s restaurant sits on the limestone foundation of the Bromfield Mansion, which was built for wealthy Boston merchant Edward Bromfield Jr., and stood on this site from 1722.
Décor is classic but contemporary, due to the harmonious marrying of antiques and modern art; and the property’s individuality is emphasised by the specially commissioned artworks and installations, created for the hotel and displayed in every floor’s elevator lobby. One of the most striking, which dominates the main lobby, is Green Dot, an oil on canvas by Jules Olitski (1922-2007), Russian-born post-painterly abstractionist. Olitski has been recognized as one of the century’s brightest talents by Architectural Digest Magazine.
XV Beacon is a multi-award-winning hotel. In 2013, Travel & Leisure Magazine named it Boston City’s No. 1 and included Mooo on its list of Best Steakhouses in the U.S. In 2012, Condé Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards named it No. 1 Hotel in the Northeast and No. 52 of the Top 100 Hotels & Resorts in the World. It was the 2012 Fodor’s 100 Hotel Awards City Chic Winner; and featured on Condé Nast Traveler’s 2013 Gold List of World’s Best Places to Stay, and in U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 Best Hotels in the USA.
