THE PAST:
Marked by an imposing tower, Parador San Francisco, as it’s known locally, was originally part of a 14th-Century palace and mosque within the imposing Alhambra (the name of which comes from al-hamra - Arabic for ‘the red’ - and refers to the red stucco of the walls). It was later converted into a Franciscan convent. Part of the building was the chapel where the kings of Spain were once buried.
THE PRESENT:
This is probably the best-known of all Spain’s paradors. It is also the one which offers its guests the unique opportunity of staying within the Alhambra – the awe-inspiring complex of palaces and fortresses which dominates the Andalusian city of Granada. An unmistakable Arabic flavour remains in Granada’s cuisine, crafts and layout of narrow streets and hidden patios; and the interior of this parador combines both Moorish and Christian styles. Its fragrant gardens, sparkling fountains and arcaded courtyards are unforgettably beautiful. (Scroll down to end for GETTING THERE details.)
