MACDONALD FRIMLEY HALL & SPA, Camberley, Surrey

THE PAST:

Frimley Hall, a listed building, with listed wallpaper in the entrance hall, was designed and built by a wealthy man, G.W Fowler, in 1882. Much of the exterior of the front remains true to his original idea. In the 1920s, he sold it to J.F Wright, whose fortune and fame were based on Wright'’ Coal Tar Soap, and whose wife was from the Avery family, makers of the well-known scales. J F Wright was a keen golfer and built a small course in the grounds of Frimley Hall. His later wish for something bigger led to the construction of Camberley Heath Golf Course.

Frimley Hall’s next owners were a family called Spears, who specialised in converting old timbered buildings to modern usage without destroying their character. They made it into a hotel. During the Second World War, it was commandeered by the British Army. After the War, the Spears Family sold Frimley Hall to a Mr and Mrs Shepherd; their artist son, the late David Shepherd, was well-known for his paintings of elephants and other African wildlife.

THE PRESENT:

Now a stylish hotel, this unexpected country-house hideaway, is well-placed for Windsor, Ascot races and Heathrow airport, and 45 minutes from central London.
