THE SLAUGHTERS COUNTRY INN, Gloucestershire

THE PAST:

Located on the banks of the River Eye - known here as Slaughter Brook - in the Cotswold village of Lower Slaughter, this property occupies an area formerly known as Washbourne’s Place, which took its name from the family who owned it in 1470. The building, which dates from the 17th Century, was originally divided into three farm-workers’ cottages, with a stable block.

In the early 1920s, the three cottages were converted into one large, private house. This later became a boys’ cramming school for Eton, with the barn building used as a recreation area, and its upper floor covered by a large model railway. In the main house, the boys' assembly and dining room were in what’s now the lounge area; the Westbury room was the headmaster’s office; the bedrooms now called The Timbralls, Cotton Hall and Penn were the boys' dormitories.

After its school days, Washbourne’s Place reverted to private ownership. In March of 1988 the house opened as a hotel, with a new name - Washbourne Court. Following the severe floods of July 2007, Washbourne Court closed for an extensive £2million refurbishment, re-opening in December 2007. Since October 2011, with a new name - The Slaughters Country Inn - it has been owned and operated by Brownsword Hotels.

THE PRESENT:

The Slaughters Country Inn has a welcoming, relaxed ambience. Located in the heart of the village, it is loved by locals - whose presence adds to the warmth of the welcome which guests experience.

The Slaughters Country Inn is licensed for civil weddings.
