THE SAMLING, Windermere, Cumbria

THE PAST:

The house, overlooking the north-eastern shore of Lake Windermere was built in the early 1780s, for Edward Thorneycroft. By the 1800s, it was in the hands of John Benson, landlord to the poet William Wordsworth – who would walk to The Samling from Dove Cottage in nearby Grasmere, to pay his rent.

THE PRESENT:

Set in its own 67-acre estate overlooking Lake Windermere, this a renowned luxury hotel in the country that is, emphatically, not a country-house hotel. It offers very fine food and wine, impeccable service, great comfort - and breathtakingly beautiful views.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

Choose The Samling if you appreciate the best, value a degree of isolation, enjoy small, intimate hotels and revel in the beauty of the English Lake District.

THE PROPERTY IN DETAIL:

RELAXING
As well as their elegant good looks and high levels of comfort – which include log fires when the weather requires it – both the lounge and the drawing room have wonderful views over the lake.

EATING & DRINKING
The restaurant at The Samling offers imaginative dishes prepared, with a lightness of touch, from only the finest, freshest local ingredients. An eight-course gourmand menu is available. The hotel has a excellent wine list, and also offers notable selections of rare malt whiskies and cognacs. The hotel restaurant is open to non-residents for dinner every evening, afternoon tea and lunch every day, so it is advisable for hotel guests to book.

SLEEPING

Dovenest is a standard double. It has no lake view – however, wonderful use of different textures has created a chic and luxurious room with the wow! factor.

OUTDOORS
The Samling’s grounds make a marvellous display space for some well-chosen contemporary works of art, including Gather, an intricate iron work by William Pym; Walter Bailey’s wooden man; and the spire of slate and glass by Charles Bray, on the lawn in front of the main house, which acts almost like a giant sundial, projecting the lengthening shadows over the lawn.
