THE GREENWAY HOTEL & SPA, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

THE PAST:

The Greenway hotel takes its name from the ancient path that runs alongside the property and was used in pre-Roman times by farmers, as a safe route through the Cotswold hills. However, when the manor house was built in 1584, by Robert Lawrence, it was on what was then called The Little Shurdington Estate.
A century later, 1685, the house passed to William Lawrence on death of his uncle, also called William. It was the younger William who created the once-famous gardens at Shurdington, in memory of five generations of his family – his great-grandfather who bought the land, his grandfather who built the house, his uncle who enlarged the estate, his own generation, and his son’s. Sadly, of his own generation he had lost his beloved brother to dysentery and then, within months of one another, his wife and his 23-year-old son died. William Lawrence became a recluse, consoled only by creating the garden. Today, the only traces of it that remain are the old oak tree in the meadow, and the sunken garden.
The Lawrence family eventually sold the estate in 1854, and it changed hands several times more before opening as a hotel in 1947.

THE PRESENT:

This beautiful Elizabethan manor house has retained its historic features and charming character. It is one of eight hotels in The Eden Hotel Collection - winners of the ‘AA Small Hotel Group of the Year’ 2014-2015.
