BISHOPSTROW HOTEL & SPA, nr Warminster, Wiltshire

THE PAST:

The original manor of Bishopstrow, built in the late 18th Century near the banks of the river Wylye, was on the opposite side of the road to the present house. It had extensive, landscaped gardens which, as well as the 1770 Doric temple, included the summer house, the boat-house and the pump room. In 1815, Squire William Temple built a tunnel under the main road to join the two areas of the grounds. In 1817, following a fire in the original house, the building of a new one began, on the present site.
That house remained the property of the Temple family until 1950, when it was sold to Keith Neal, a leading collector of firearms. Each of his 2,000 firearms was ready to fire at a moment’s notice - usually at a target which stood on the lawn outside the drawing room. Also during this time, the Cavalry company stationed at Warminster used Bishopstrow stables to house their horses.
In 1976, Kurt Schiller bought Bishopstrow and opened it the following year as a 10-room hotel. Over the next decade, the hotel was extended to 28 rooms, and the swimming pools and tennis courts were built. In 1988, the hotel was sold to the Blandy family, makers of Madeira wine and owners of Reid’s Palace hotel on the island of Madeira. They were forced to sell the hotel, now badly in need of renovation, in 1995. The new owners, three partners, refurbished the bedrooms and added a hair salon, and the health and beauty spa. In 2001, Bishopstrow became the sixth hotel in the growing Von Essen collection. In October 2011, Bishopstrow House was bought by Longleat, the estate of the 7th Marquess of Bath.

THE PRESENT:

Bishopstrow is now a fine luxury hotel, in the English country house tradition, set in 27 acres of beautiful countryside, and surrounded by long-established formal gardens.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

Yes, if you want to escape to rural tranquillity, and relax in luxurious surroundings, or if you want to take a family break within easy reach of Bath and Salisbury, and only 6 miles from Longleat. The hotel is licensed to perform civil wedding ceremonies.
