PADASTE MANOR, Muhu Island

THE PAST:

Edging the Baltic, on southern tip of Muhu Island, this enchanting site was probably selected for the building a manor soon after the last and decisive battle against Estonian pagans on Muhu Island, fought in 1227 by order of the Pope, and led by Bishop Albert von Buxhoeveden in 1227.
The origins of the house go back to the 14th century, and some ancient walls dating from then lie at its very heart. However, the earliest written history of Pädaste Manor dates back to 1566, when King Fredrik II of Denmark gave it to the von Knorr family, for services rendered to the Danish Crown.
In the late 1800s, German-Baltic nobles enjoyed great wealth, and Baron Axel von Buxhoeveden, Imperial Hunting Master at the court of Czar Nicholas II, and owner of Pädaste, had the house enlarged considerably, and given a new façade. The resulting harmonious dimensions and clean lines define Pädaste Manor’s character today. The buildings framing the courtyard were also erected during this period.
The Baron and his wife Charlotte, heiress to the von Siemens company, introduced a touch of worldly splendour to the sleepy island of Muhu. Charlotte brought artists, musicians – and culture - to Pädaste when she moved, with her entourage, from St. Petersburg to Muhu for the summers.
Then, one event in the winter of 1919 changed everything: Axel von Buxhoeveden was brutally assassinated by revolutionaries while on his way from Pädaste Manor to the mainland. Charlotte fled to Brandenburg the next day, and 700 years of family presence on Muhu, which had started with Albert von Buxhoeveden’s conquest of the island in 1227, came to an abrupt end.
Pädaste Manor suffered years of neglect - and a brief spell as a retirement home - during the Soviet period, when the island itself became a military base, and part of a closed security zone. In 1996, the present owners, a Muhu Islan native and his Dutch partner, bought the manor as a ruin, untouched for decades, and began the task of restoring it.

THE PRESENT:

Pädaste Manor is now a world-class, small luxury hotel and spa - and a regular recipient of awards and accolades. If your idea of heaven is an unspoilt, natural wilderness, in a place largely untouched by the passage of time - but you want to enjoy it in luxury, albeit understated - then this is the perfect choice for you.
It has a wonderful sense of place, and an air of ‘simple luxury’ - achieved by furnishing the house with an appropriate sense of understatement, which nevertheless acknowledges its noble character. Natural materials and textures, including ancient wooden floors - succeed in reflecting Pädaste’s dignity, where wall-to-wall carpets, gold taps and ostentatious displays of glamour would have failed. Yet guests’ expectations of comfort are well met with sumptuous bespoke bedding and luxuriant fabrics.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

Yes, if you like simple luxury and enjoy escapist travel experiences. The estate is a haven of peace, with wonderful places to relax and dream, and offers a very individual spa concept and the finest dining options – all with the ambience, charm and service expertise that can only be found in a privately owned hotel.
