L'HEURE BLEUE PALAIS, Essaouira

THE PAST:

Originally built as a local governor’s palatial residence, briefly used as an orphanage, and then abandoned for almost three decades, this stalwart building in the heart of the medina was eventually rescued and restored, to open as a world-class, luxury hotel in 2004.
Essaouira, in Arabic, means ‘the beautifully designed’ and refers to the 18th-Century redesign by a French architect of this small, fortified seaport, formerly known as Mogador. The medina or ‘old town’ of Essouira was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

THE PRESENT:

L’Heure Bleue Palais is a masterpiece of immaculate refurbishment, inspired redecoration and assiduous attention to detail. The result: authentic atmosphere evoking colonial elegance – and an exquisite hotel, in a exceptional location, in an exotic North African kingdom.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

This is the perfect choice for a romantic escape, a wind-down break, or an adventurous holiday in a country of colourful contrasts. Nor could there be a better base from which to explore this historic town, with its bustling souks, busy fishing port and broad, sandy beaches. Wi-fi access is available throughout the hotel.

THE PROPERTY IN DETAIL:

RELAXING
The Salon Anglais or English Lounge bar, with its welcoming atmosphere, fireplace and colonial-style decor, is open throughout the day and in the evenings and serves a selection of teas, cocktails, spirits and liqueurs. After 6pm, aperitif time is extended with the presentation of a selection of authentic Moroccan/Oriental tapas - kémia - and soft live music.
The Home Cinema screens classic movies every night. The Billiard Room, accessed from the patio, allows you a gentle exertion.

EATING & DRINKING
Breakfast at L'Heure Bleue Palais features traditional the Moroccan morning meal alongside Western classics. You will find homemade pastries and Moroccan breads, homemade jams, fresh fruit salad, homemade yoghurt, cheeses, cold meats, cereals, Essaouira smoked salmon, dried fruits and local honey, as well as eggs - hard- or soft-boiled, scrambled, omelettes - and Moroccan specialties such as M'semen (small cakes made with semolina flour), Beghir (pancakes) with ‘1000 holes’ and Amlou, a traditional Moroccan spread made with almonds and Argan oil.
The poolside open-air Terrace Grill restaurant on the rooftop serves a light-meal menu which revolves around the sea.
The Salon Oriental Restaurant, an opulent and sophisticated Moroccan lounge with a cosy atmosphere, is the gastronomic heart of the hotel. Its nightly menu offers the highest standard of inventive, modern cuisine. Festive, themed nights feature at weekends for the discovery of new flavours.

The hotel has its own unique wine label - Heure Bleue Val d'Argan. The result of a voyage in taste initiated by hotel director François Laustriat, it is a delicate blend of white musk, floral aromas and mature fruit blending with notes of spice and honey. The Val d' Argan domaine, was created in 1994 in the region of Essaouira by Charles Melia, is now the cradle for this exceptional wine; and produces quality wines from Rhône grape varieties which are perfect matches for Chef Ahmed Handour’s exciting and innovative cuisine, which blends Oriental spices with the flavours of the Mediterranean and Morocco. Not only is Heure Bleue Val d'Argan served in the hotel's Salon Oriental restaurant, it is also available for purchase in the hotel boutique.

Chef Ahmed Handour shares his knowledge and his passion for Oriental cuisine in practical cookery classes for guests. Commencing at 3pm, these cost €90pp or €136 for a couple including dinner, and must be reserved 24 hours in advance. Special animation and tasting for groups of from 8 to 12 persons are also available on request.
