INTERCONTINENTAL PARIS AVENUE MARCEAU, Paris

THE PAST:

The hotel, which opened in 2008, (originally as the Crown Plaza Paris Champs Elysees) incorporates three heritage buildings, from three different periods, which overlook a central courtyard. The building fronting Avenue Marceau dates from the 19th Century and was built during the Second Empire under Napoleon III, as part of Baron Haussmann's grand transformation of Paris. Avenue Marceau, named after a famous French general, is one of the 12 broad avenues of Haussmann's L'Etoile, radiating from the Arc de Triomphe. The second building belonged to Achille le Tonnelier, Comte de Breteuil (1781 - 1864), a diplomat and politician who became a senator in 1852. The third building, the former Maison de la Chimie, was built in the 1970s.

THE PRESENT:

The original, heritage buildings which now comprise a luxury hotel retain the dignity of their grand proportions, whilst the interior has a wholly modern take that is highly original, startling and audacious. The uncompromising confidence with which contrasting colours, styles and periods are combined, in the main public areas, results in an unexpectedly harmonious whole. The central feature of the lobby is a Baccarat crystal table; a Murano glass chandelier hangs overhead, and reproductions of Michelangelo sketches adorn the walls. The look is totally contemporary, here and throughout, but not at the cost of comfort.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

If you respect the past, appreciate avant-garde design and are seeking a stylish address in Paris, this hotel is for you. You'll be a short stroll from perhaps the western world's most famous thoroughfare, the Champs-Elysées, with its sweeping views that capture the essence of this city, close to some of the city’s finest and trendiest restaurants, and within walking distance of the main tourist attractions. And, with its ‘Golden Keys’ concierge, valet service and Rolls Royce at guests’ disposal, the hotel will deliver a memorable, luxury experience.

THE PROPERTY IN DETAIL:

RELAXING
Warm and relaxing colours enhance both lounge and library.

EATING & DRINKING
The ambience of the bar and restaurant is refined and intimate; its name is M64 – a reference to the hotel’s address: 64 Avenue Marceau – and it offers unpretentious, modern gastronomy. As Chef Romain Marzet explains, "I like cooking to be straightforward and balanced, built around fresh market products." The kitchen is open onto the dining room, and diners can choose to eat casually at the counter, or sit in comfortable club armchairs in a lounge atmosphere.

SLEEPING
Each bedroom’s architecture and decoration makes it unique – but white is widely used, giving a sense of spaciousness and tranquillity. Elegant touches include Hermes toiletries.
