The Great House at the heart of the Nisbet Plantation was built in 1778, at a time when the estate - where first sugar cane and later coconuts were grown - was a lot larger. On her marriage in 1779 to Josiah Nisbet MD, it became the family home of Frances Nisbet. Born on Nevis, and known as Fanny, she was the daughter of the island's senior judge, William Woolward. Sadly, her marriage was short-lived as the young doctor became deranged and within 18 months was dead, leaving Fanny to bring up their infant son - also called Josiah - alone. There wasn't enough money from her late husband's estate to live on, so Fanny asked her wealthy great-uncle John Herbert, owner of the Montpelier Plantation, for help. He invited her to run his household and act as his hostess when, as President of Nevis, he entertained dignitaries.
One such visitor was a young ship's captain called Horatio Nelson, destined to become England's greatest naval hero. He and Fanny fell in love, and were married at Montpelier on March 11, 1787. The newlyweds did not set up home at the Nisbet Plantation, but at Burnham Thorpe in Nelson's native Norfolk. Their relationship did not survive their many long separations. In November 1800, Nelson told Fanny the marriage was over. Four months later, his mistress Emma, Lady Hamilton, gave birth to their daughter Horatia.

Today, the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club is the only plantation house hotel in the Caribbean set on a beach - and the beautifully restored Great House is still the focal point of the property. Service is exceptional, the 2009 Condé Nast Traveler 2009 Gold List rated it as the highest level in the Caribbean. Guests even get a hurricane guarantee: while the chances of it happening are small, should one hit Nevis, or come close enough to disrupt air service to the island, they will issue credits, move dates and ‘do just about whatever you'd like to make sure you are satisfied’.

If you want to experience a Caribbean beach holiday in a first-rate hotel that feels like it's your own second home, this is where to come. On arrival, guests receive a Welcome rum punch. The Nisbet Plantation is licensed for civil weddings.
There is resort-wide Wi-fi, and a gift shop.

Pre- and after-dinner drinks are served in the lounge of the Great House where, as in the formal dining room, art and antiques echo its historic importance. The lounge also offers a library, with board games, cable TV and wireless internet access (a laptop is available for guest use in the lobby. There are no TVs in the bedrooms or suites.

With two-foot-thick stone walls, and one of only three air-conditioned restaurants on the island, your comfort is assured if you choose to dine indoors, but the AAA 4-Diamond Great House Restaurant also has a screened verandah if you want to eat outside. Gourmet food is guaranteed here and - as befits an island - fresh fish features on the three-course dinner menu every night.
The open-air restaurant, Coconuts, overlooks the pool and the beach. Breakfast is served here, and it also hosts the popular Thursday night Beachfront Dinners. With the lively rhythms of a local Caribbean band setting the mood, the evening begins with General Manager Jamie Holmes' Rum Punch party. Depending on the season, either a sumptuous buffet or a surf-and-turf dinner follows.
Sea Breezes Bar at the beach serves lunches as well as cooling drinks and colourful cocktails, including several 'signature' tropical concoctions. If you're heading off to explore the island, you can pre-order a picnic lunch to take with you.
Guests can enjoy complimentary afternoon tea daily, served in the English tradition, on the terrace of The Great House - looking down the magnificent Avenue of Palms to the sea.

The cottage-style rooms and suites, in air-conditioned, pale-lemon cottages topped with traditional Nevisian white pyramid roofs and surrounded by a quarter-acre of land each, are spacious yet intimate. A nightly turn-down service operates.
