QUINTA CASA VELHA do PALHEIRO, Madeira

THE PAST:

The Casa Velha do Palheiro was built in 1804 in the hills above Funchal as a hunting pavilion and summer residence for João Esmeraldo, 1st Count of Carvalhal. He employed a French landscape gardener to oversee the laying out of the quinta’s stunning gardens, and over 200 staff to keep them in order. A feature of the gardens are the wide variety of trees which the Count imported from all over the world: many were given to him as gifts by ships’ captains – and even the King of Portugal. He later added two wings to the house, had an octagonal temple built, as a folly, on a hill overlooking it, and also a chapel, which was dedicated to St John the Baptist.
The 2nd Count of Carvalhal, who inherited the estate in 1837, built a small house to the north of it for his French mistress. However, he spent little time on the island, and took little interest in the estate. A lavish spender and a gambler, he fell into financial difficulties and was forced to sell it. In 1885, the estate was bought at auction by an Englishman: John Burden Blandy, head of the famous Blandy Madeira wine lodges. His family and friends were highly critical of the move, as the estate was far from Funchal – and, at that time, not even accessible by road, only by basket sledge or horseback – and the house was almost derelict.
John Burden Blandy built a new house, where his family would spend their summers, on the site of the 2nd Count’s Casa da Francesca – the French woman’s house – and made many improvements to the estate, as well as caring for its gardens, as did succeeding Blandys.
In 1993, the Palheiro Golf Course was opened – on estate land that had been farm and forest. Two years later, Adam and Christina Blandy set about restoring the original house, Casa Velha, to make a small hotel. It opened in 1997 as Madeira’s first five-star country house hotel.

THE PRESENT:

The Casa Velha do Palheiro has now expanded to occupy three separate buildings – the original Old House, the Garden Wing and the Golf Wing.
