QUINTINHA de SÃO JOÃO, Funchal, Madeira

THE PAST:

This property was once part of a more extensive property, stretching to what is now the centre of Funchal, which belonged to the Viscount of São João. However, an extravagant lifestyle and bad money management eventually brought about this once-wealthy family’s downfall, and resulted in the liquidation of their estate – including the quinta.

The next owner, a Dr. Rui de Bettencourt da Câmara, began an extensive renovation of the property around 1900, greatly enlarging the original manor house, and also building a chapel. The estate was then divided into lots, producing a number of small quintas, including Quintinha de São João - which means ‘The Small Manor House of St John’.

Subsequent owners, the Austrian Maurice Faber and his Hungarian wife, Georgina Von Reese, were prominent figures in local society and entertained many distinguished guests here, including Commander Jacques Cousteau. A nephew inherited the Quintinha when they died, and lived in it until 1979.

The present owner, Mr. José Barreto, bought the property in 1982, and completely restored the main house, enriching its heritage and transforming it into an estalagem or ‘inn’.

THE PRESENT:

This is now an enchanting, small hotel, full of history and charm, and evoking the gracious living of a time gone by. Set amidst sub-tropical gardens, it is distinguished by its characteristic old gateway, covered with antique Portuguese ceramic tiles from the Santana factory.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

Situated just 1.5km from the centre of Funchal, this hotel has a relaxed atmosphere, a delightful garden and a good spa.

THE PROPERTY IN DETAIL:

RELAXING
As well as having a library, the Quintinha de São João – recognising that reading is an enduring holiday activity for many, to be relished in moments of relaxation with total tranquillity – prides itself on providing a wealth of small, comfortable and inviting niches. Furnished with antiques and decorated with beautiful pieces of Portuguese porcelain, these have a delightful ‘at home’ feel.

The games room is equipped with a snooker table, table tennis, and two tables on which to play chess, draughts or cards.

EATING & DRINKING
The A Morgadinha restaurant, in a traditional Madeiran building adjacent to the Quintinha, serves both breakfast and dinner. From its À La Carte and Table d’ Hôte menus, a variety of regional and international delicacies are available - with Goan cuisine as the speciality of the house.

There are two bars: Vasco da Gama in the main building is the perfect spot to sit, listening to the piano, looking over the bay of Funchal from the terrace, and enjoying a drink before or after dinner. Weather permitting, the pool bar serves light lunches, afternoon tea and snacks as well as drinks.

SLEEPING
All bedrooms overlook the gardens. They are spacious, with a distinctive separation between the sleeping and living areas, and air-conditioned. The sophisticated decor includes traditional Madeiran embroidery and exclusively designed furnishings.
