QUINTA da ROCHINHA, Ponta do Sol, Madeira

THE PAST:

Ponta do Sol, a small village on Madeira’s sunny south coast, was one of the first settlements on the island with a climate suitable for growing sugar cane. Quinta da Rochinha was built in the late 1800s for a firm which produced and sold sugar: it served as head office, manager’s home and warehouse for sugar-cane.
When Madeira’s sugar industry declined in the 1930s, the property – with its outstanding ocean views – became a lookout point for whaling. In 1950, it was converted into a residence for the acting judge of Ponta do Sol’s courts.
A failed real estate project followed in the 1970s and then, in 1980, a Norwegian couple bought and refurbished the property, which consisted of three houses. They lived in one and transformed the others into a meditation retreat for tourists.
When they sold up in the late 1990s, the present director Andre Diogo – who had spent his weekends in Ponta do Sol and developed a passion for the property – joined forces with his own and another family, plus a friend, to buy it and make it into a hotel.

THE PRESENT:

Opened in April 2001, the hotel - Estalagem Ponta do Sol - benefits from the owners’ vast experience in the business, the property’s exceptional clifftop location and architect Tiago Oliveira’s determined respect for the nature and identity of the area. His daring, contemporary, relaxed yet sophisticated structure, elegantly married to its surroundings, has earned admiration – and membership of the demanding and prestigious Design Hotels group.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

If you would like to experience the real Madeira, this is an excellent location in which to do so.The village of Ponta do Sol, set in a ravine at the foot of craggy peaks, enjoys more hours of sunshine than anywhere else on Madeira. Nevertheless, it is off the tourist track and retains its traditional character. A palm-lined promenade edges the pebble beach, while behind the white-washed and red-roofed buildings, banana plantations climb the terraced hills.
