BLYTHSWOOD SQUARE, Glasgow

THE PAST:

Blythswood Square - consisting of four identical classical terraces facing a central garden, on a hill site west of the city - was created between 1821 and 1823. From 1910, The Royal Scottish Automobile Club (RSAC) bought up individual houses along the eastern side of the square, until it owned the whole row. It then commissioned James Miller to remodel the whole terrace as the club headquarters. This rebuilding work was completed in 1926.
Blythswood Square was one of eight official starting points of the 1955 Monte Carlo Rally.
In 2002, the RSAC sold the building to 'Blythswood Developers'. It was purchased by The Town House Collection in January 2006, and opened as a hotel in November 2009.

THE PRESENT:

Carefully restored and tastefully transformed, this landmark building is now a luxury, five-star hotel, enviably positioned overlooking one of few remaining Glasgow city-centre green spaces. Many of its aristocratic architectural features – including marble floors and fireplaces, wood panelling, ornate ceilings, cornices, columns and a superb sweeping staircase - have been retained, and now blend beautifully with the well-balanced, sympathetic addition of bold design features, rich textures and strong colour accents. One of these – red lampshades in the windows – is an admirably amusing acknowledgment of the area’s past role, as a red-light district.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

Blythswood Square Hotel makes a very handsome and hospitable base for a stay in Glasgow.
The hotel is licensed for civil weddings.
