CHANNINGS, Edinburgh

Of the five Edwardian townhouses in South Learmonth Gardens, edging Edinburgh's city centre, which now comprise Channings Hotel, one – number 14 - was the home of the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and his wife, Emily, while he was secretary of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society between April 1904 and July 1910.

Channings opened as a hotel in 1990. It has much of the feel of a Scottish country home, with its charming Victorian paintings, prints, books, furniture and memorabilia – collected over years by the owner, Peter Taylor. The Shackletons’ original library and drawing room are now available to hire as meeting rooms. Two bedrooms and three suites have also been styled in honour of the explorer connection.

Channings makes a relaxed, informal and friendly base for a stay in Edinburgh’s ‘urban village’ of Stockbridge, conveniently located less than 10 minutes’ walk from the city’s main shopping and sightseeing area, and just seven miles from Edinburgh Airport. Taxi times from the two main railway stations are: Haymarket seven minutes and Waverley 11 minutes. With their valuable local knowledge, the hotel’s Guest Services team can advise on where to dine and what to see when you visit, and give useful tips for your onward journey.

The hotel is licensed for civil weddings.

The elegant lounge overlooks South Learmonth Gardens, and serves afternoon tea.

The wine bar is, of course, the place for a pre- or post-dinner drink – it also serves light lunches and has a bar-meal menu.

Channings Restaurant has a warm and welcoming ambience and its team of chefs have developed an impressive repertoire of modern, exciting dishes, with a menu that focuses on seasonality and high-quality, organic produce.

Special dining options include the weekend ‘Boozy Snoozy lunch’, instigated in 2002 – at which guests can linger over a delicious three-course lunch with two bottles of wine, at a set price of £69.95 for a table of four.

The restaurant is child-friendly, with a menu that caters for all ages. Colouring-in and dot-to-dot puzzles are available for children to enjoy. Highchairs can be provided if needed.

No two bedrooms are exactly alike at Channings - each has been given its own quirky style and point of difference from the next. Even the smaller rooms have queen-sized beds, and there’s one four-poster room, with a bathtub made for two. An additional bed or cot can be placed in rooms for family stays.

Most of the bedrooms contain a mix of antique furniture, prints, drawings and memorabilia, plus rich, textured fabrics such as linen, silk, suede and velvet: the result is interiors that are striking yet elegant, tailored and classic.

Superior rooms are typically larger than the Unique rooms and have more spacious bathrooms, some with Jacuzzi baths.

Also in the Superior category are the two Shackleton rooms named for the famous Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, who lived for a time in one of the original houses that now make up the hotel. They and the three over-sized suites – with their roll-top baths and walk-in showers - also named in his honour, have been styled using striking black-and-white photography of his expeditions to the coldest places on earth. However, underfloor heating and spare blankets (supplied as standard in all bedrooms) ensure that guests won’t feel a chill - even in the depths of a Scottish winter!

All six Luxury suites have private drawing rooms, separate bedrooms and large bathrooms, with separate bath and shower. In addition, they enjoy great views, either over the western part of city or the hotel's private gardens.

The hotel’s small garden and sun deck ensure that guests can relax and unwind out of doors – perhaps with drinks, a light bite or afternoon tea...
