COBBLERS COVE, Speightstown, St Peter

Sugar cane planter and local politician, Joseph Haynes – known as Joss - lived with his family in the parish of St Joseph on the island’s turbulent Atlantic side. Having decided that they needed a weekend retreat on a calm bay, they chose Cobblers Cove on the west coast, in the parish of St Peter, and built a house which they called Camelot. Today, this is the name of one of the hotel’s two top-floor suites. Joss Haynes made enlarging the house and developing the garden his hobby during their weekly visits with family and servants. When he retired, he and his wife moved to Camelot, where they lived until his death in 1963.
In 1968, the house was sold to a member of another prominent sugar family – the Colletons. Original founders of South Carolina, they also helped to shape the destiny of Barbados. Their history on the island is commemorated in a mural on the walls of the hotel’s second to-floor suite – the Colleton. Cobblers Cove was then converted to a hotel catering primarily to families. In the early 1980s, the emphasis shifted to fine food...
