MÖVENPICK HOTEL, Berlin

THE PAST:

Dating from 1914 and situated in the centre of Berlin, near the Potsdamer Platz, this grand-scale, Neo-classical building was the former headquarters of the Siemens industrial group, and later used as a tax office.

THE PRESENT:

As a hotel, this listed landmark was extensively renovated and modernised, winning the Berlin Real Estate Award in 2005. Inside, history and modernity intermingle triumphantly in a series of startling contrasts, a mix of fearless contemporary design with frequent tributes to an industrial past. The resulting, unique ambience is exciting to explore. In the corridors, for example, exhibits on loan from Berlin’s German Museum of Technology serve as sculptures. They include archaic railway points, locomotive boilers, signals and steam equipment – all are aptly travel-themed references to the nearby railway station, Anhalterbahnhof.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

The Mövenpick is very well placed for discovering the new city centre of Berlin, lying between former East and West – the Berlin Wall was only 500m away – with many famous sights and sites close by. These include the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and the government quarter, Checkpoint Charlie, Potsdamer Platz, and a large number of well-known museums, such as those on Museum Island – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

THE PROPERTY IN DETAIL:

EATING & DRINKING
In the Anhalter Bar, colour is used with bold extravagance and, again acknowledging the building’s industrial past in way that will surprise, high-voltage insulators from French electricity pylons support the glass bar counter. Video projectors and lounge music add to the stylish atmosphere.
The hotel’s restaurant, Hof zwei, located in one of the historic courtyards, is in the style of a Mediterranean piazza. It has a glass roof which can be opened in fine weather to create a small, city-centre oasis.
Its very young and creative team, offering well-known classics, light Mediterranean cuisine, Swiss and regional dishes, work in an open-view kitchen – a feature that reflects the strong focus on the cuisine.
The famous breakfast buffet – a well-known feature of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts – makes a daily appearance.

SLEEPING
Bedrooms – which vary in style and layout due to the nature of this historic building – have specially designed, heavily grained, Mediterranean olive-wood furniture. All have air-conditioning. Most face the inner courtyards and so are very quiet.

There are 243 rooms, of which 43 are single rooms and 200 are double rooms, including 22 Junior suites which are the most spacious rooms, a Tower Suite and 18 Atelier Deluxe rooms. Situated on the top floor, and featuring angled ceilings, the latter have each a free-standing Philippe Starck bathtub and separate wellness shower. Some have views over the roofs of Berlin, others face the inner courtyards.
