CEDAR COURT GRAND HOTEL & SPA, York

THE PAST:

It was in early 1902 that foundations were laid for a new headquarters building for North Eastern Railways. Construction began in May and took four years. The Yorkshire Herald called it 'a huge palace of business'. Certainly little expense was spared, and many palatial design features were included. Handmade bricks were used to face the building, Ancaster and Portland stone to dress the upper floors, and black and white Belgian marble for the entrance hall. Roman mosaic edged the terrazzo – or faux-marble – floors in the corridors, and patterned wood blocks were used in the offices. The 51’ x 28’ board room held what was Britain’s biggest board room table at the time and, innovatively, the windows were double-glazed.
At the Grand Opening in 1906, staircases and corridors were carpeted in crimson, and a London orchestra played at the top of the main staircase. In May 2010, there was another important opening for this majestic, grade II listed building, as York’s first 5-star hotel.

THE PRESENT:

The Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa sets outs to evoke the Golden Age of travel, and recreates the opulence and luxury of that era, with the addition of contemporary flourishes. Master Suites and the Penthouse Suite have butler service. Most of the iconic building’s original features remain, and no two bedrooms here are the same: each is unique in shape and design - with quirky architectural features including porthole windows, skylights and vault doors – and many have views of York’s city wall and the magnificent Minster.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

The Cedar Court Grand is well-placed for a York city break – the medieval centre is five minutes away on foot - and its extensive facilities and an excellent spa ensure that you can make the most of every moment. It is just a short stroll from the railway station - journey time from London is 2hrs; from Manchester, 1hr 30 mins; from Birmingham, 2hrs 20mins; from Glasgow, 3hrs 30 mins. Guests arriving by car may have their vehicle valet-parked in the adjacent NCP Car Park, where charges apply. (For sat-nav use postcode YO1 6HT.)
The hotel is licensed for civil weddings.

THE PROPERTY IN DETAIL:

RELAXING
The stylish Lounge is the place to relax in luxury. You can take afternoon tea here or, more formally, in the elegant HQ restaurant - as well on the Terrace when the weather is agreeable.

EATING & DRINKING
Pre-dinner drinks are served in the plush Grand Bar, where over 50 classic cocktails – as well the hotel’s signature cocktail, the Exclusifely Grand – and a selection of Ruinart champagnes are available.
The welcoming Whisky Lounge offers single malts, Scotch and Irish Whiskeys as well as a ’Grape, Grain and Cane’ menu. Cigar enthusiasts can also select one from the Whisky Lounge’s antique oak humidor, to enjoy on the Garden Terrace.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in The Grill Room which offers views alongside the historic city walls and of York Minster. It offers classical home-cooked food in the great tradition of famous hotel grills, with a menu of recognisable favourites – think French onion soup, T-bone steaks and cherry pie – prepared with Grand flair. Alternatively, for fine-dining in an historic setting, there's the oak-panelled HQ Restaurant – where formal afternoon tea is also served. Its three- to five-course menus ensure that dining is an occasion. The well-stocked cheese trolley features cheeses from around the world as well as British classics.
Al fresco dining is available on the Terrace, which offers food from the hotel's Lounge menu.
