ÇIRAĞAN PALACE KEMPINSKI ISTANBUL

THE PAST:

It was Sultan Abdülmecid who ordered the building of a new, marble palace on this site to replace an earlier one, made of wood, which was demolished in 1857. Work began at once, but he did not live to see its completion - which was instead overseen by his brother and successor, Sultan Abdülaziz, in 1871. The Empress Eugenie of France – who was rumoured to be in love with him – visited the then-unfinished palace when she stayed in Istanbul on her way to open the Suez Canal in 1869.
Its name – pronounced cheeraan – comes from a Persian word meaning ‘light’ and refers to the flambeau or torchlight entertainments that were a feature of the Çirağan Festivals, held in the public garden which were here from the start of the 17th Century.
History would decree that this palace was to be the home of the last of the Ottoman sultans. In 1909, a constitutional monarchy was created in Turkey, and the palace was used as the Ottoman Parliament Building. The following year it was severely damaged in a fire and abandoned. Talk of making it into a hotel in the 1930s came to nothing; only in 1986 did restoration begin. In 1992, Kempinski - Europe’s oldest luxury hotel group - was awarded the management contract for the palace and its grounds, in which a new luxury hotel, echoing its traditional architectural magnificence, was built. The Sultan’s Palace, now restored to its former glory, became a part of that hotel, and houses 11 of its suites, including the famous Sultan Suite, and its award-winning Tuğra Restaurant, as well as a number of meeting and function rooms.

THE PRESENT:

The Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul harmoniously blends old with new, and European grand-hotel traditions with Turkish hospitality, to create a resort ambience in the centre of the city. Oozing opulence, it offers every modern convenience – from hairdresser to heli-pad, laundry service to limo - that both leisure and business guests could wish for. As a result, it features frequently on the world’s ‘Best Hotel’ and ‘Gold’ lists. Every bedroom and suite is richly decorated and has a marble bathroom. There is a wide selection of indoor and outdoor dining options, a superb spa and an infinity pool with spectacular views across the Bosphorus.

THE PROPERTY IN DETAIL:

RELAXING
With its stunning waterside location and wide terrace, the Gazebo lounge is a delightful place to sit, unwind and while away an hour - if not a few. Afternoon tea, featuring traditional Turkish delicacies, French pastries and chocolate sculptures from the hotel’s private patisserie, and accompanied by live music, is served here. There are also many locations in the extensive gardens which offer comfortable seating and endlessly fascinating views over the Bosphorus, plus a welcome breeze.

EATING & DRINKING
The Çırağan Palace’s Michelin-Starred Executive Chef, Olivier Chaleil brings to its tables the benefit of his international experience, his French roots and his sincere take on organic, fresh and local products. His menus marry classic Ottoman cuisine with newly-evolving Turkish fusion recipes. Your culinary journey here will be exciting!
All of the hotel’s restaurants feature a balcony or terrace overlooking the Bosphorus. One - Tuğra Restaurant - is in the historic Sultan’s Palace. Featuring rich Ottoman décor and live classical Turkish music, it specialises in traditional and modern Ottoman and Turkish cuisine. A traditional ‘candy stick’ trolley delivers a sweet finale to your meal. Laledan Restaurant offers an extensive buffet breakfast, at which more than half of the items available are organic, and Sunday brunch. The Gazebo Lounge serves continental breakfast, and contemporary cuisine at lunch and dinner, as well as its famous afternoon tea buffet.
Pre- and post-dinner drinks can be savoured in the airy Le Fumoir Bar - a unique venue, Far Eastern in style, in the Çırağan’s lush, green gardens - or, accompanied by live music, in the more traditional Çırağan Bar.
In the summer months only, the Çırağan Bosphorus Barbeque serves grilled meat and fish dinners at its waterside tables, where views encompass the breathtaking sweep of the Bosphorus Bridge. You can start and finish your evening at the Summer Lounge and catch the sunset as you sip a Lychee or Blueberry Mojito, and settle back after dinner with a nightcap, as the live saxophonist and violinist provide mood music.
