QUINTA BONITA, near Lagos, Algarve

The original property was built in 1972 by Bob and Mimi Whewell, from Yorkshire. This was the first house in the area, so the couple were responsible for bringing in water, electricity and roads. They sold Quinta Bonita to the Kortekaas family in 1981. At the time, there was no development between it and the old town of Lagos, nothing between the old farms at the top of the ridge and the distant Monchique mountains – and cows grazed on the land to the rear of the property.
The new owners developed the gardens, built walls and re-built the small casa. From the beginning, it would be both a family retreat and self-catering rental property for guests to enjoy. The first item of furniture to be purchased was the marble table in the breakfast room - the slab of rock being chosen directly from the marble factory - followed by the hand-carved bar and sideboard, made to measure by a carpenter in Northern Portugal.
Many years later, in 2008, a dream of one day running a bed-and-breakfast, coupled with the desire to re-vamp the house, resulted in the idea of turning the Quinta into a boutique hotel. New plans drawn up for the property were designed to maintain as much of the original building as possible, whilst also incorporating the modern luxuries and comforts that guests would want. Building work began in October 2009 and months of negotiating, coercing and encouraging of Portuguese architects, builders and servicemen followed – and so did Portugal’s wettest winter since 1870.
Quinta Bonita opened as a luxury boutique hotel on June 17, 2010.
Today your hosts at Quinta Bonita are the owners, Fraser and Chantelle Lindsay.

This enchanting property combines traditional charm with modern luxury, and features many mementoes of the owners’ wide-ranging travels as well as uniquely Portuguese touches – including the quinta’s original azulejos, or tiles. A calm oasis, set in peaceful country surroundings, and with just eight bedrooms, it offers an intimate and relaxed experience. Guests are warmly received, with a welcome drink on arrival, and complimentary afternoon tea served daily.
If green credentials count for you, you’ll be pleased to know that they do for the owners, too. Committed to reducing Quinta Bonita’s environmental footprint, they ensure that all water is UV- carbon filtered, provided from the property’s own borehole, and solar-heated. Pool maintenance and all household cleaning products are environmentally friendly. Organic products are used wherever possible, with many herbs and fresh fruit sourced from the Quinta’s own land. Glass, paper, plastic and tin are all recycled; vegetable and fruit waste is composted. Fresh bread and eggs are provided daily from local neighbours; wines are sourced through local boutique wineries.

Quinta Bonita’s laid-back, friendly atmosphere ensures that guests instantly feel at home and leave refreshed and revitalised. With its inviting pool, beautiful garden and panoramic ocean views, it’s a delightful choice for those who want to stay put, but is also well-placed as a base for exploring. You are only moments away from some of the Algarve’s best beaches, and a short drive from Lagos, with its bars, restaurants serving both local Portuguese specialities and international cuisine, and nightclubs. Further afield are Sagres, Cape St Vincent, the most south-westerly tip of Europe, Silves which was once the Moorish capital of the Algarve, and the mountain town of Monchique.

If you’re keen to play golf, there are two courses in the immediate vicinity of Lagos and at least another dozen within a 20-minute drive. The hotel can arrange all your golfing requirements, if you detail your request when you make your booking. Also available nearby are horse-riding and a wide range of watersports.

Quinta Bonita also offers luxurious yoga retreats throughout the year. With its tranquil gardens, singing frogs, rolling lawns, cascading fountains and a sparkling swimming pool, this is the perfect oasis in which to completely relax and go deeper in mind, body and soul, whilst lacking for nothing in service or comfort, ensuring a deep sense of nurturing and wellbeing. SEE BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT YOGA RETREATS.

You can savour the freshest fare the way it was always meant to taste, at Quinta Bonita. Start your day with a full buffet breakfast that includes juice straight from the orchard and fresh bread from the village bakery. For a small extra charge, a daily á la carte hot special is also available.
Light lunches are served by the pool, and chilled beers and local wines – most of which come from local boutique wineries, primarily in the Alentejo region and along the West coast - are also available. If you are planning a day out, you can take a picnic pack.
In the evenings, your hosts are happy to make local restaurant recommendations and bookings, and to organise local taxis, which are plentiful and cheap.
