CAP ROCAT, Bay of Palma, Mallorca

Located on a secluded headland on the Bay of Palma, this former military fortress built in the 19th Century was once part of the island’s coastal defences.

It opened in June 2010, totally refurbished, and transformed – by renowned local architect Antonio Obrador - into a stunning yet unostentatious hotel, with a highly individual character and a very powerful sense of place. The fortress nevertheless retains the integrity of its original architecture, and its unique natural environment – which is now part of a marine reserve. The property extends to 88 acres, and has 2 km of coastline.
Imaginative decorative touches, including the use of bullet casings for door handles, and old gun-carriages as bases for cocktail tables, pay tribute to Cap Rocat's historic heritage. Early 20th-Century photographs depicting life in Mallorca, from the architect’s private collection, have been hung throughout the hotel; and a local textile workshop was commissioned to weave a traditional Mallorcan fabric for the upholstery and curtains.

This hotel is an excellent choice if you are seeking a unique and very different ambience for an escapist getaway, and if you value privacy. The location is isolated and unspoilt
(Scroll down to end for GETTING THERE details), yet all the charms of Mallorca are within easy driving distance. Although Cap Rocat is a property on a grand-scale, it nevertheless offers intimacy, with many quiet corners – both indoors and out – where you can sit in seclusion. And after dark, with flambeaux illuminating the drawbridge, and throwing dancing shadows onto the old stone walls, the atmosphere is truly romantic.

There are a number of inviting lounge areas inside, and plenty of places to sit, or lie, in the sun out of doors. In addition, all suites have their own private furnished patio and terrace.

The cuisine at Cap Rocat is based on seasonal Mediterranean produce, sourced from local organic farms whenever possible – and meals can be served in a variety of locations. Enjoy breakfast in the main courtyard, or on your own private patio – in which case a continental spread will be brought to your door in a picnic hamper, and set on your outdoor table. The informal restaurant at the waterfront Sea Club in a secluded cove, is perfect for lunch. Dishes are grilled or cooked in a traditional firewood oven; and afterwards you can relax on a sun-lounger on the sand. For dinner, the Fortress Restaurant is set up under huge tents, with spectacular views across the bay to the twinkling lights of Palma. You can also have a meal served privately: perhaps on your patio, or in the Moroccan Lounge, or in the former fortress kitchen– or in another of several unique locations on-site.
Cooking lessons, show-cooking demonstrations and wine-tasting are held in the former fortress kitchen.

There are currently 24 guestrooms at Cap Rocat – two double bedrooms, and 22 suites – with plans to open more. All are vast when it comes to size, and low-key when it comes to style. All rooms have heating/air-conditioning, and feature a plasma-screen TV with international channels, complimentary Internet connection (WIFI – LAN), a private bar, an electronic safe and a hairdryer. Bathrobes and slippers are supplied, and there is underfloor heating in all bathrooms. A nightly turn-down service is offered, as is 24-hour room service.

The two Fortaleza Double Rooms are located along the fortress’s exterior walls, and have mountain views.
