PALACIO GUENDULAIN, Pamplona

THE PAST:

This imposing palace was built in the 18th Century for Sebastian de Eslava y Lazaga, Viceroy of New Granada – a Spanish colony in South America, which included much of what we know today as Colombia, Cost Rica, Panama, Guyana, Ecuador and Venezuela, and Panama. It served as a family residence for over 200 years – and, briefly, in 1845, as a royal residence, when Queen Isabel II and her entourage stayed. Later, the building was left empty for some years, during which it was used a store for the family’s many antiquities. It finally opened its doors as a luxury hotel in 2009.

THE PRESENT:

Still one of Pamplona’s most prestigious addresses, Palacio Guendulain now offers its guests all modern comforts in a unique historic setting. Its magnificent staircase and an outstanding private art collection are much-admired, along with an early 18th-Century carriage is on display in the hotel lobby. There are more carriages to be seen - along with a collection of classic cars - in the courtyard, which also houses a fountain designed to mark the introduction of running water to the city of Pamplona in the late 18th Century.

THE PLACE FOR YOU?

Yes – if you like your surroundings to be imposing! The hotel is in the oldest part of Pamplona, and well-placed for visiting its ancient churches, its gothic cathedral and its citadel. The multi-lingual concierge service ensures that you get the most from your stay.
